My mom went through that a couple years ago at age 68. They were worried about how she'd recover since she carries quite a bit of extra weight, she was in the hospital 3 days anesthesia had her down for a full day and a half, but she was up walking around at home in 4 days. The physical therapy is what seems to make or break the recovery. The nurses gave her a lot of pain forcing the knee back to its full range of motion, then they figured out her "good" knee had less range of motion then the replace knee. I think it took about 3-4 months before the tossed her cane.
