This sounds like one of those situations where no matter what you do, someone's gonna be upset.
I think I would try the diplomatic approach at first, saying you want to restore or some other line like that. Since he dosen't use it anyway, what difference does it make to him? If that dosen't work, then I think I would just show up one day with a truck and trailer and take it. If it has as much value to you as it sounds, I don't think this option would be too difficult. All value aside, it's a shame to let it just sit outside and rot away. Save it while you still have something to redo.
