Got an old car. Right after 200,000 miles the fuel pump died. Took me around two weeks to get around to getting the tank off, getting a replacement pump, put it in and get the tank and hoses all back in place. (I don't work well laying on my back.) Drove it another couple hundred miles, but then parked it because I'd gotten a better car.

Months later, I decided to try and start the old black beast. I'd taken the battery out, and in putting a battery back in it, I broke off the little + wire. Damn thing would spin, but not fire. Dumping gas directly into the air cleaner would get it to run just as long as it took to consume that gas. Of course I figure the new fuel pump went bad too. Car's up on blocks, tank's back off and laying on the ground (hoses and wires still connected-that's next), Dad says "hey, this wire needs hooked up!" He connects it, gets in and twists the key, and she fires right up. Now I leave the car in the yard with that wire unhooked, keys in, ready to roll. But somehow, nobody else ever manages to make it move. ;)

Now my mantra is, "don't assume, don't guess. Check. Check twice. Check a third time, because you might've screwed up checking the first 2 times." Well, I do worry a lot less now.
