No doubt it starts at $2.50/bale when they pay the farmer. But diesel doesn't cost $13/bale. 44,000# payload = 1,100 small squares. I'm just guessing, but give 'em $1.50 per loaded mile for driver, fuel, maintenance, depreciation. Move it 2,000 miles. That's only $3,000 or $2.75/bale. Give the distributor a 20% profit margin. (2.50 + 2.75) + 20% = $6.30 Heck, even if the farmer is charging $4/bale...we're still at $8.30. $12, $16/bale...someone's making a nice profit which I bet isn't getting to the trucker or the farmer.
