I had one of those and can tell you it is probably a worn out exhaust valve. The seat will be perfect because it is hard but the valve will be burned. You can buy a regular one for about $15 bucks or a stellite one for about $30 I think. It has been a while. I put a new piston in mine and bored it .010 over since I had it apart to change the valve. That is a JEWEL of the kohler line of motors. I have used 12,14, and 16 horse kohlers and the 10 horse is by far the smoothest and best running of them all. Kind of like a 327 chevy kind of way. It has a short stroke and smaller bore and is balanced much better than its big brothers. Mine was a 1000 model with a manual trans and it ran a 44 inch mower deck very well once I got the new valve in place and motor rebuilt. Do a compression test. It will more than likely be low. Good luck. It will be a great runner.
