I can't grow Maris Piper so I use Pentland Dell. It comes out lovely and brown from the chip fat. I only have a small potato plot, about 2 acres this year but I like to grow a wide variety. Rocket and Foremost for early (May to July) Nicola and Mafona for early bakers, Merlin and Valor for maincrop with a few Romano (large red). The best one I have grown over the past few years is one called Ambo. Its a Cara/Desiree cros and grows huge in the right conditions. I had some weighing 5 lbs each the year before last. But there was a seed failure this year and could not get any. My work in agricultural electronics is mainly with potato planters, sprayers and harvesters here in England. So I see large crops from planting to harvest in the field as I go all over the country problem solving on the equipment.
