Generator/alternator for 300 Utility.

Looks like a Delco alt. would be an awfully tight sqeeze under the hood of the 300. Looked at the 77 generator and it measures real close to the 300's. If I try to switch the 77 gen. to the 300 and put the alt. on the 77 there'd be plenty of room for both. Will the generator from the 77 electrically work on the 300? What would be the difference? I'll have to run the proper wiring of course.
