Sorry for your loss. Lightning is a major cause of fires. The old timers put up lightning rods for a reason! Each year we have 1 or 2 lightning caused structure fires out of the 8 or 10 we'll see. Had a haybarn a couple years back...lightning hit. Young kid rented this farm away from his family's "home" farm so he didn't have a backhoe or front-end loader there. We called a local contractor to bring down his excavator -- back in the day of small square bales, you'd just use a bunch of firefighters to haul them out and split 'em open. Can't handle large rounds with just manpower! If there was no electrical storm, my next suspicion is someone with matches. The Fire Marshal I'm sure will also ask about other activities recently in the barn -- to rule out the odd stuff like the classic linseed oil soaked rags, or a spark from a welding torch that smouldered for hours. Anyone smoke who could've dropped a smouldering cigarette?
