What is it..part of a governor?

Dad found these "balls" in a field by our house several years ago. Does anyone have any idea what it is. Been told it could be a counterbalance for a steam engine...or possibly a weight for a governor? There are pictures in the link below, i couldn't figure out how else to post a picture on here. This is driving us nuts, help anyone?
