Definitely check that filler cap. Had a GMC diesel acted like that; would idle forever, but try going down the road and no telling how far you'd get. The lower the fuel level in the tank, the farther you could go. Beat my brains out for weeks, then one day, on a whim, I spun the cap off and what do you know, vent was plugged with dust & dirt, so it would draw to a vacuum in the tank and then the pump couldn't pull any more fuel.
