OT hay fever in the early 1900s

I know many people today have hay fever but my grandfather says he cant remember anybody having hay fever or allergic reactions to hay back in his day as a farmer in the 20s 30s and 40s. Is this just something recently come about or has it been small anf now just exploded as a pandemic
