Hi Dave, The smut fungus only grows on corn, anything growing on the soil is something else. You may or may not have a problem, but it won't be from a soil fruiting body. Incidentally, in Mexico corn smut is viewed as a delicacy. After I heard that, I collected some and sauteed it with onions and butter. Much more tasty than store bought mushrooms. You have to get it when it is still young and moist, before it dries out. It has changed the way I look at corn smut. It used to gross me out, now I try to find it. Perception is everything. Ray
