Try cleaning the breaker points by drawing a clean strip of white cardstock trough them several times when they are in the "closed" position. Then, crank the engine over to a point where the breaker points are "open", and spray electrical contact cleaner between them to remove any debris and paper residue. Allow them to air-dry in the open position before cranking the engine to check for spark or to try to start it. Cleaning the points in this way does not leave them roughed up like using a point file, hopefully leading to a longer service life then points that have been "butchered" by a file.
