Both answers below are good ones, but the best advice I have seen to similar questions on this board is to check your local sources: tractor stores and newspaper to start. See what is available and find out which brands are servicable in your area. (remember, you are mechanically challenged. Just like a used car, all older machines will need some maintenance.) This forum is full of passionate tractor lovers, each of which has a favorite. When you find a few tractors in your price range, come back and ask what folks think of those models. You might also ask around to see if there is a decent mechanic that you can have look at your potential tractor to help assess its value and reliability. There are many good choices for tractors in your price range that will do what you want.
