I do a fair number of electrical repairs with various systems and I too am convinced that one large HIGH amp battery is the only way to go. I change battery boxes and cable arrangements to accommodate the conversions. My opinion is that most starter/solenoid problems originate with poor voltage supply. When the voltage drops, the current rises and you create heat causing starter failure. Two six volt batteries in series require too many battery terminal connections which corrode resulting in poor voltage and two twelve volt batteries in parallel confuse the regulator and only the better battery is sensed by the regulator resulting in the remaining battery being undercharged. Do not believe the label on the battery as per amps, they lie. Look and see at what temp. the cold cranking data was collected. Buy your batteries by the pound at a reputable equipment source. Example; two new, 1150 amp each, discount auto store batteries would not turn over a 504 cubic inch diesel at approximately 30 degrees F. One 1130 amp large battery was substituted to prove the point mentioned above and the starter whirled the engine without difficulty. All connections and cables were in top conditon for both trials.
