Hey George, the "S" post on the solenoid is where you connect the wire from the key switch. This is the post that actually energizes the solenoid and pulls it in to start the tractor. The "I" post is used for a function that needs to energize momentarily as you start the engine such as pulling in a latching type relay, etc. In other words it's dead until the solenoid is energized at which point it becomes Hot with voltage as long as the solenoid is energized. It actually pulls it's power off the same plate internally as the main lug going to the starter motor itself. As far as the main cables, I'm sure, from what you said, you have the one from the battery going to one of the two main lugs on the solenoid and the one from the other main lug going to the lug on the starter motor. Then you have the body of the motor grounded. If this is the case and you have the S terminal hooked to the start wire from the key switch everything ought to be working properly unless there is a problem elsewhere in the wiring. Good luck.

Fabricating Sidesheets - by Chris Pratt. The easiest and best first-time project for wanna-be sheet-metal workers like myself is flat or nearly flat metal cut and drilled to be a tractor's sidesheet. A sidesheet is sheetmetal to cover either the engine as in the case of early Oliver's, Massey-Harris' and many crawlers or the wiring and electrical components as in the case of the Massey-Harris Pony, Allis Chalmers' D Series (D-14, D-15, D-12, D-10, D-17, and D-19). The need for fabricating becomes obvious when you go to buy any of these
