I didn't say it was a good thing and at that age it seemed ok to me. And way back in that era before seta belts in cars etc. It didn't seem all that dangerous.
Some kids can read fluently at age three, some can drive.
Of course now my kids all wore helmets, gloves, knee pads and shin/knee pads when riding bikes.
