We have been raising German Shepherds as a hobby for many years and have placed many as handicapped assist dogs and as K-9 dogs with police units across Iowa. We have one female, she is 7 years old, who happens to be pure white and she also constantly runs in circles too. It doesn't matter if we have her in a small pen or a huge 50 x 50 one, she still runs the perimeter. She is not agressive and loves to play but seems to be wound up different than our other dogs, even her aunt (who is solid black by the way). We checked into this a few years back and found a couple other people with white shepherds and theirs also run in circles. One vet told us this is because shepherds are herding dogs and are used to circling the livestock they are guarding, constantly on alert for predators. Sounds plausible but why does our white one do it and none of the other 6 we have? Kind of an odd coincidence.
