Coolant turns to semi-solid ?

This story happened in a classic car, not a tractor, but it is an interesting tale so I thought I'd pass it on. Back in the 80's, a local guy here was restoring a classic Cord automobile. The engine was completely rebuilt and reinstalled in the car and then other work was done on it. He became sick during this time and didn't do anything to the car for a number of years, and then in the early 90's he passed away and the car sat until about 2000 when it was sold by the fellow's wife. It made it's way back east and the restoration continued along with upholstery, wiring, and all the other things that needed doing to complete the restoration. When they were about to get the car started this spring, the coolant level was checked and unfortunately it had turned almost solid, a rubbery semi-solid gell so the story goes. Whether it is just in the radiator (as was seen) or throughout the engine isn't yet known but obviously, somebody did something wrong. What might have caused this?
