Try opening Control Panel, click Add Hardware. Have your computer look for uninstalled hardware.
If not that, it might help to do a System Restore.
I've screwed myself into having to do this several times. So far I haven't had to take the box to the shop.
Click on Start, Help and Support, System Restore.
Select the most recent restore point that you think the cd burner was working.
If you ask people you don't know for advice we can't be held responsible if you take it.
