flat tire on ATV

I got a flat tire on my 4-wheeler saturday while mudding. It looks like a thorn poked its way throught the measly 1 or 2 plys of the tire. My question is; do I need to take the tire off the rim and put on a patch, or can I just use some of the tire sealant like Fix-A-Flat or that green slim. I remeber how much of a pain it was to get the tires on the rims, I"d rather not take them back off. Thanks for any help or ideas
