1989 Suburban Stalling Problem - Resolved

A few weeks I posted about my '89 GMC Suburban that would immediately stall when shifted from park into drive or reverse. I had taken it to several reputable engine shops where I was told that it was a transmission problem, and transmission people said it was an engine problem. Several of you YT readers responded with suggestions of possible causes. Since the high tech mechanics with all of their diagnostic equipment couldn't figure out the stalling problem, I eventually took the Suburban to a local dark and dingy repair garage where an old-time mechanic quickly figured out that the timing was way off and oil had gotten into the distributor, messing up the impulse or the pickup. He put in a rebuilt distributor, set the timing properly, and it now runs like new. The mechanic said that he sees this oil-in-distributor problem a lot with the 1980s and early 1990s 350 engines, and he's replaced a lot of these distributors to cure stalling problems. This ordeal showed me once again that it's best to find a good old honest mechanic with many years of experience and a dirty garage.

I want to thank all of you who took the time to post your ideas and suggestions on to how to fix this annoying problem.
