We have to think in a pre-1960 context on this type planting. At that time, farmers took great pride in having the straightest plow furrows, the best shaped haystacks, and the straightest corn rows. Plus in those days before good herbicides, it kept the corn field very clean. Important in a time of smaller farms, more farmers and more neighbor interaction. My own father removed the check plant equipment and wire spools from his planter some time in the 50s.
