Tach drive

I have a 12-volt generator system Pos-ground that I want to change over to an alternator Neg-ground hookup. Currently my generator drives the tach by an attached gear reduction unit that bolts onto the back of the generator. When I change over to the alternator system how can I drive my tach? Can I get a Delco alternator with a longer shaft and a mounting plate? Can I get a unit to attach to my distributor that will drive the tach? Any other ideas?
