re/old ford pu

To get it running, I changed the ignition switch, harness from the ignition box and it was good to go. My next problem is the left axle has the teeth sheared off. I pulled both axles. Are they not supposed to be one shorter than the other? Both mine are the same length? The right axle goes approx 1 inch into the rear end. The one on the left only goes in 1/2 inch. And the teeth are stripped off it. To me it looks like someone put the wrong axle in this thing. But have no information on this vehicle. By the way, its a 78 ford ranger xlt. Thanks. Pat.
