To prevent the spread of American-strain rabies in Ontario it's against the law to release a racoon more than 1/2 mile from where you caught it. It's o.k. to kill nuisance animals though, I think. The Ministry of Natural Resources spent two summers innoculating every racoon they could get into a trap to create a 50-mile buffer zone around the Thousand Islands Bridge. So far it seems to have worked, but the population seems to be creeping up a bit. Maybe the innoculated specimens are healthier.
