By 'funky' do you mean that it goes into position easier than going into reverse? To me that would indicate that the forward clutch plates are worn more than the reverse ones are (logical), so by removing some shims you tighten up that forward clutch. I'd follow the manual advise. The shuttle is similar to the Power Director on the D series tractors- if the PD doesn't have a firm snap going into position, the clutch needs adjustment. Likely there's a side access cover on yours.
