There are some AMD chips that share socket design with Intel chips, but even so, most motherboards are designed around one or the other. It makes little sense to put an AMD chip in a board that had Intel in mind, or vice-versa. I've been using AMD chips since they first came out, and was using Cyrex before that. I've also been screwing around with Intels since my first 8086 processor. I stopped using Intel around when they latched on the Pentium name that no longer makes any sense. The first Pentium was - the fifth generation chip - that's what the "Pent" stands for. Other companies were calling their chips, more simply, 5X86 - which means the same thing as Pentium - i.e. the fifth generation of the 8086 processor. Now adays, none of the names mean anything so it is sometimes hard to tell when there has been a real improvement. The AMDs have worked just as well as comparible Intels, and they used to be quite a bit cheaper. Not so much anymore.
