'88 Chevy K2500 Torque Converter

I am switching out a bad 350 for a good 350 engine in my Chevy. After taking the bad engine out the torque converter slide forward and leaked some tranny fluid. Do I have to fill the torque converter before I put the new engine in or does it fill through the transmission while running?
