Differential lock on 1972 Case 580 CK

Does anyone know how to correctly engage the differential on a Case 580 CK. It seems to only work when I push down and hold in the foot lever while I am moving. Is this bad for the tractor? I don't know how to do it otherwise, it has a shuttle transmission.
