No, I am sorry but the value of the grills is not meaningless. If the worker puts more time into them than they are worth he is not going to run a profitable business long and he needs to learn that too.
I would base what I gave him on exactly that regardless if he spent an hour or a week on them. And let him know beforehand what he was getting into.
