1953 Farmall Super MD

My father has a '53 Super MD, it starts with gas then needs to be switched over to run on deisel. He is having problems getting it to start with the gas, thus can't get it to run without pulling it.
Does anyone have a tractor like this or knows of what could be the problem? Any help would be a great benefit.
