If you use the power director as a clutch to shift gears in the transmission, you will end up with a tractor that jumps out of gear. They were not designed to be operated that way. Tractors that were operated correctly don't usually have transmission problems, while those that were ground into gear using the power director as the primary clutch are very prone to gear and shifter fork wear that causes them to jump out of gear.
