Without an overrunning clutch or live PTO, a bush hog's blade becomes a huge flywheel directly connected to the back wheels of the tractor. Pressing the clutch does not break the direct linkage, so the wheels will turn until the blade stops. This provides terrifying moments for the operator when, for example, the tractor refuses to stop when you encounter an unseen boulder or it resolutely powers over the edge of an embankment or into a garage door while you frantically slam on the brakes.

Direct PTO/driveshaft links are found on old Ford and Ferguson tractors and the problem is compounded by their low horsepower and high ground speed in lower gears. For this reason most contributors will recommend spending the extra money for a tractor with low gear ratios and live P.T.O. if the purchaser plans to use the tractor with implements.
