You're being kind of picky. I've heard the term "doodle-bug" used the way you say, but I've also heard it used to describe a car or truck converted to a tractor and I've heard it used that way by dozens of people from all parts of the country. You may call it "wrong", but my guess it's just as "right" as the description you prefer. In fact, I'd be willing to bet that a converted tractor has been called a "doodle-bug" since the 1920's when they first started being produced. I can't prove that, but I'll bet you can't disprove it either.
