I believe the damage would be the pin you described. It happend while running one of these cheap rotory cutters with no slip clutch on it. This tractor was way overworked after my friend bought it. He thought it could do as much or more as what I'd do with a 90hp tractor. I didn't even know he had it, and he cracked the head trying to pull 4-18's with it, fixed that and then took out the pto. It spins at full speed, with full power, anytime the tractor is running. It never spins slow.
