The points provide a "ground" for the coil. Connect a voltmeter between chassis ground and the terminal on the distributor. When the points are open you will measure about 12 volts. When the points are closed, you should have no voltage. Since you have voltage, it indicates the points are not making good contact (dirty). You mentioned burning up coils-- Most coils operate on 6 volts. Check to see if your coil is marked to determine if you need an external resistor. Often they will say "external resistor needed" or "has internal resistor". K-Mo
