Andy, I had to scatch my head there, for a moment, as to what you are working with, finally remembered, it's a Wisconsin. If the engine uses a true 12-Volt coil, NO external ballast resistor is needed. However, if you are unsure if it originally used a resistor, or not, and it's burning points, the simplest "fix" is to get a universal 12-Volt coil that is specifically labelled "NO external resistor required". NAPA has a reasonably priced true 12-Volt coil, # IC14SB. If you do not have a NAPA nearby, any auto supply store should be able to cross that number to what they're pushing.
