Check battery voltage at the battery posts with the engine running and compare it to the factory dash guage. Measure at the battery posts,you should see min 13.5-14.5 max volts. The electronics on those old chevys are kinda bad.
On my old 92,a very low voltage reading is fixed by a slap on the top of the dash. When the radio and heater controls quit,a slap on the right side of the dash makes them pay attention. Typical 14 year old printed circuit nightmare 8)
