It's still legal to burn trash where we live and I do. Only have to go to the dump once a year (about $20). It makes a difference _HOW_ trash is burned. A slow smoky smoldering fire is a bigger nuisance than a fast burning one. I use a 55 gallon barrel with both ends cut out, and a brick under the upwind side. It gets a good draft and doesn't smoke much. Also wait for days when the wind is away from the neighbor's and toward an open field.
