Sometimes you can use a large screwdriver as a "stethoscope" for listening to/honing in on where a sound like that is coming from. Hold the plastic handle to an ear while placing the metal tip at different places on the block or on external engine components with moving parts. Is this a gas engine? Grab the distributor and feel for vibration.
