Consider the following for a "rustic" look. Buddy of mine made a picture frame for his Dad. Picture was of the old home place. The frame was much as you did from old barn lumber, on the new cuts he wire brushed it down to expose the grain. For each flat he added strands of rusted barbed wire (from the home place) then using a torch he lightly burned wood to add effect. Turned out GREAT! Just some thoughts!
