I recently had to run a temporary straight pipe on our 1855 when the manifold broke off in the muffler, and it really wasn't much louder than with the muffler.
I always wear earplugs, but it really isn't much of a difference. I made a sleeve that I welded on what was left of the manifold, then I busted the chunk out of the muffler and I saved myself a couple hundred bucks.
