I had one like that on a Ford loader a year ago... I think I took the die grinder to the end of the rod, and took the sharp edge off... Just chamfer the road a bit. Then I think I took the torch to the end cap and heated it some so the packing warmed up a bit. Boiling it in oil might be a better idea. Then I took the shaft of a screwdriver and rolled it around the packing, trying to expand it some, work it and seat it a bit more. That might help some.... however, I think in the end, I just relied on the chamfer on the rod, and drove it home. That rod is still tight, but it doesn't leak. I know what you mean about the kits too.... Mine was about 90 bucks. Don't want to ruin it. Good luck. Rod
