Have you ever seen the truck they rent at Home Depot? It has an aluminum bed with sides about a foot tall that fold down. Very nice set up. No idea who makes them for them though.
And as for the old VW trucks some others mentioned here, they are really neat and quite handy but they won't haul much weight and I doubt you will find many around anymore.
