Cutting tractor tires for traction

Is it possible or advisable to cut into a worn tire with a grinder or some other tool to improve the traction? I have a Case 530 with 6-ply 14.9x24 tires. It had been driven on the road before I got it so the tread is kinda flat. Can you sharpen the tread? Is it even worth the effort? Or am i just going to have to cough up for a new set of tires?
