Get under there and look closly,that shifter has a grease fitting. It is hard to spot and usually gets no grease. Result is a hard shifting trans that hangs up between gears. Hard to believe how much difference a bit of grease means in that spot. I still have a 79 with that setup. There is also a part in that shifter that wears and makes sloppy shifting. You disassemble the shifter and reverse the part for like new shifts. Been 10 years since I did that repair ,and have forgotten the exact details.
