I have an older imported tractor. Over the years, I have found several "standard" parts that substitute quite well for the originals. The original belt for the fan/alternator/water pump is expensive and somewhat hard to find. I just installed a new Dayco belt replacing a Gates that failed. Belt is about 3/8" wide. The Gates had notches on the inside. The new Dayco has sort-of notches on the outside, none on the inside. I know that belts heat quite a lot as they flex around pulleys and notches help reduce the heating due to internal friction. Anyone have experience comparing Gates and Dayco for the same application? Which proved to be best?
