For chains to be effective the cross chains must not drop between the lugs on the tire tread - otherwise chains do little to improve traction.

I had this problem (cross chains falling between the deep tire lugs) after I put new tires on my Super M. Solved it by tying each pair of cross chains together at the middle using pairs of cold shut repair links and 2" welded rings. This forces a portion of each cross chain to stay on top of a tire lugs. The chains now provide nice "bite" and traction - though they ride rough on hard surfaces.
