Aloha Tham,
If you look at radiator in a car, the color is black. The reason (theory) for this is to let the heat from the inside to radiate out. Now, if the heat is on the outside, like a sun shinning on black, the heat will be absorbed. So, in your situation, the black tape will absorb the engine heat (not what you want) and not reflect it.
